A Study on 3D Interaction System using Arduino Glove Design and Glasses-Free 3D Display Technology
@International Journal of Advanced Studies in Computer Science and Engineering
With the rapid development of 3D virtual reality and game design techniques, significant efforts are being devoted to the study of somatosensory interactions and wearable devices. In this study, we have combined 3D stereo images with a wearable hand device for facilitating the display of 3D virtual scenes in a realistic manner and allowing users to interact with virtual scenes in an immersive setting to maximize the realism of virtual environments. For this purpose, the Unity 3D game development platform was used, and our system was developed through the integration of an Arduino-based system with a glasses-free 3D platform. An Arduino Uno development board was connected to a 6-axis sensor and bending sensors to enable the detection of hand gestures by a hand-worn controller. The implemented system was then affixed onto a glove, so that a user wearing such a glove may directly perform controlling actions in a virtual environment. We also developed a simple object-throwing computer game to validate the effectiveness of this hand-worn controller. This system is also able to realistically display 3D effects using a glasses-free 3D platform. The results of experiments showed that users were able to transmit hand gestures to the glasses-free 3D platform using the real-time hand-worn controller, and the contents of the gaming system were able to react in real-time to a user’s hand gesture signals.
An Improved Surface Simplification Method for Facial Expression Animation Based on Homogeneous Coordinate Transformation Matrix and Maximum Shape Operator
@Mathematical Problems in Engineering
Facial animation is one of the most popular 3D animation topics researched in recent years. However, when using facial animation, a 3D facial animation model has to be stored. This 3D facial animation model requires many triangles to accurately describe and demonstrate facial expression animation because the face often presents a number of different expressions. Consequently, the costs associated with facial animation have increased rapidly. In an effort to reduce storage costs, researchers have sought to simplify 3D animation models using techniques such as Deformation Sensitive Decimation and Feature Edge Quadric. The studies conducted have examined the problems in the homogeneity of the local coordinate system between different expression models and in the retainment of simplified model characteristics. This paper proposes a method that applies Homogeneous Coordinate Transformation Matrix to solve the problem of homogeneity of the local coordinate system, and Maximum Shape Operator to detect shape changes in facial animation so as to properly preserve the features of facial expressions. Further, root mean square error and perceived quality error are used to compare the errors generated by different simplification methods in experiments. Experimental results show that, compared with Deformation Sensitive Decimation and Feature Edge Quadric, our method can not only reduce the errors caused by simplification of facial animation, but also retain more facial features.
Development of a Low-Cost 3D Interactive VR System using SBS 3D Display, VR Headset and Finger Posture Motion Tracking
@International Journal of Advanced Studies in Computer Science and Engineering
With 3D virtual reality (VR) technology and game design developing rapidly, a growing number of research experts are becoming involved in the study of motion sensor interactions and VR headset devices. At present, headset devices easily cost up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars. As a general gaming accessory, the price point of these devices is quite high. To reduce the cost of gaming accessories, this study combined the most current and popular headset device, with motion sensor and 3D VR technology to develop a low-cost 3D interactive VR system. This system utilized Homido VR headset to carry a smartphone, and Leap Motion, the motion sensor, was used to track hand gesture changes. Unity was used as the main 3D VR developmental environment to develop a 3D dart game system. To portray a realistic 3D environment, this system utilized Unity to develop the headset’s side-by-side (SBS) 3D image for the left and right eyes. The SBS image for the left and right eyes was presented via the Homido VR headset equipped with the smartphone, allowing the user to gain a more immersive experience of the 3D dart game environment. The experiment results showed that while this system displayed SBS 3D game content to the users, they could use Leap Motion to manipulate 3D virtual objects instantaneously. Thus, this system presents users with 3D real-time interactive experience via the head-mounted device.
Surface Simplification of 3D Animation Models Using Robust Homogeneous Coordinate Transformation
@Journal of Applied Mathematics
The goal of 3D surface simplification is to reduce the storage cost of 3D models. A 3D animation model typically consists of several 3D models. Therefore, to ensure that animation models are realistic, numerous triangles are often required. However, animation models that have a high storage cost have a substantial computational cost. Hence, surface simplification methods are adopted to reduce the number of triangles and computational cost of 3D models. Quadric error metrics (QEM) has recently been identified as one of the most effective methods for simplifying static models. To simplify animation models by using QEM, Mohr and Gleicher summed the QEM of all frames. However, homogeneous coordinate problems cannot be considered completely by using QEM. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a robust homogeneous coordinate transformation that improves the animation simplification method proposed by Alex Mohr and Michael Gleicher. In this study, the root mean square errors of the proposed method were compared with those of the method proposed by Mohr and Gleicher, and the experimental results indicated that the proposed approach can preserve more contour features than Mohr’s method can at the same simplification ratio.
